Perth Wk 11 - Saving the world a tree at a time.

27th June - 3rd July

The weather here in Perth has turned very cold with temperatures around 3 degrees at night and about 14 - 15 degrees during the day. It has also been very wet here - and when it rains in Perth it doesn’t just drizzle -  it pours down. Apparently, it has been the wettest start to winter in 6 years (seems we must have brought the rain over from Auckland).

It was another wet and horrible day on Tuesday so we decided to spend the day at Scitech and then meet Daddy for lunch. Scitech has become our latest hangout and the kids just love it there and are always finding new things to explore. I just love spending time with them, watching them working things out and helping them understand and explore new things. I really look forward to our little outings we have together. It was lovely meeting Grant for a picnic lunch (inside), Hyrum was really sad to say goodbye and couldn’t understand why Daddy couldn’t come home with us - he loves loves spending time with his Dad. The Wii is also great for wet days and we purchased a game for the kids to sing along to.

The youth at church are fundraising for their EFY youth conference event and Wednesday night was pizza night. On Sunday at church they had given out ‘menus’ for us to choose from and on Wednesday we had to ring up and place our orders.  The youth manned the phones and took orders, and then other youth were making the pizza’s - they even had a delivery service (at extra cost).  One of the youth leaders had served a mission in Italy, and learnt the art of Pizza-making there.  We only ordered one pizza (to show our support), with pretty much the works on it, but it was so yummy we kinda regretted not ordering an extra one :-)

On Wednesday evening I went to the temple and took through some family names on my Dad side of the family. I had the most amazing spiritual experience doing their temple work, I am so grateful for the power of prayer. I had prayed before I went to help me understand the importance of the  temple work I was doing and to help me feel connected to my ancestors. Well, I received an overwhelming answer. I feel so grateful and humbled to be apart of such an amazing family history work.

We had our second Joey Jams children music group on Thursday, but it turned out to be a bit of a disaster with only 4 Mums coming with their children. Three of the children were babies and  then there was my son who doesn’t really join in, so I ended up doing the music time for one little boy who is 3 and absolutely loves it. It felt really strange doing everything for only one child who was into it. I’m really hoping more people turn up next week, as I have put so much effort into it and I really want it to be a success.
We had a really fun busy day on Friday in the morning I took Hyrum and Gracie to the Library for there story and Rhyme time, they both seemed to join in a little bit more this week, and of course we couldn’t get out the library without borrowing more books, they just love looking through all the books and choosing their favourites to take home.

After Pre-primary Alysha had her little friend from pre-primary Isabell’s 6th birthday party at the Beach House indoor play center. Alysha really enjoyed herself at the party, her whole class had been invited to attend so she had lots of fun playing with her school friends. Gracie enjoyed having a little play too but only really played on anything if Alysha came over, she was much happier just eating popcorn.

While Alysha, Gracie and I were at the party, Grant took Hyrum on a date to see Cars 2. We weren’t sure how Hyrum would be since he didn’t last the distance with the last movie we saw and also he really doesn’t like loud noises, but thought if it was just him and his Dad he’d be OK.  He was very, very excited to be going with his daddy, and trying to be extra good to make sure it did happen.  When I had finished the party with Alysha, we went to the movie complex and sat down for dinner and txt Grant to ask how he was going.  The next thing I knew I had a little boy on me knee to me petrified and very upset.   Grant  said Hyrum had been good, but had just got a little too much for him.  Grant then took Alysha back in to see the final 15 minutes and despite getting upset, I think Hyrum really enjoyed being with his daddy. Maybe next time we will try something else for a Daddy and Son date.

Saturday morning we participated in the ‘Mormon Helping Hands’ community service day.  The event was planting trees with the local council. It was a coolish day and we made sure the kids were bundled up nice and warmly.  When we got there we got the 60 second -crash course on how to plant seedlings, found a trowel and went to work.  The kids really loved it, with each taking turns to dig the hole, put the seedling in, cover it back up with dirt (sand) and put the stick in it to say it was finished (Gracie favorite part).  With so many helpers there, the area set aside to plant the trees was completed in less than an hour. We even saw Sister Vos, a missionary from our old ward in Auckland.  It was just nice to be able to do our little bit for the community, and to do some service as a family.

I had put my name down for ‘Temple Cleaning’ and in the afternoon so while I was helping to clean the temple which was another act of service I really enjoyed doing, Grant took the kids for some biking and scooter fun.  They had lots of races, with Alysha on her scooter, Hyrum on the tricycle and Gracie on the trike and then went over the road to a playground.  Alysha enjoyed making daddy ‘sand’ cakes and despite the cold just enjoyed being kids.

Sunday as always is church day for us.  The first Sunday of the month is fast and testimony meeting where we fast for two meals and instead of ‘set speakers’, members of the congregation have the opportunity to share their testimonies and spiritual experiences with others.  In almost all congregations we have been in, there is usually a steady, but slow stream of people going up to share there testimony, with some quiet spots in between (as people wonder who is going to get up next).  This church is entirely the opposite.  Today, as soon as the time was opened up to the congregation at least 15 people immediately went up to the stand.  After a few people spoke (and like ony 5-10 mins into it) , the Bishop got up, and requested no more people come up, and we will just hear from those on the stand, as the rows on the stand was now completely full of people. The meeting was lovely a spiritual and sweet, and we just cant get over how eager the guys are here to get up and share their convictions.  It is really great.

Grant cooked a very Yummy Sunday roast beef dinner.  I guess he wanted to celebrate - not sure what though :-)   I am really grateful to have a husband who is good in the kitchen.

Funny Moments

I had asked Alysha (miss 5) to put her shoes away in the cupboard and she said “Naughty shoes! I had already put them in the cupboard but they flew away.” - nice try.
