Perth Week 8 - Fun in Freemantle by Train

Perth Wk8
6th - 12th June 2011

This entry was put together by Grant.

Monday was a holiday, and the birthday parties Alysha had been invited to had come.  The location was a place called The Beach House, (similar to Chipmunks in New Zealand), and was very, very cool.  They had a separate closed off area for under 4’s , and then also a very, very cool area for over 7’s that I wanted to play in (they had some great racing car arcade games) and all free once entry was paid.

On Monday afternoon, we went around and enjoyed a BBQ at David & Gretchens home.  It was great to spend time with them and their kids, our kids get on so well together and love playing with their new found cousins.

For family home evening on Monday night, (our kids fav time) we got the building blocks out and built temples out of blocks. We wanted to help our children understand the importance of Temples.  We talked about temples, and the special things that happen inside, including that’s where mummy and daddy got married,  and where we go every week to serve the Lord. For our activity we did a felt board story of Goldilocks and the three bears where all three kids took turns at telling the story. lots of fun.

On Tuesday, Alysha come down with her first Ozzy cold and loving shared it with the whole family, so our home has been a sick house ever since, Alysha definitely enjoyed having a couple of days off school.

This week I got a calling - on Thursday, Anna got a call from the High Councillor assigned to our Ward at church, wanting to come and visit.  We knew it could only be one of a few callings , and  the invitation was extended for me to serve as the 2nd Counsellor in the Elders Quorum Presidency, which I accepted.  There is much work to be done in this ward and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the brothers for however long we are here for.

On Thursday night Joe and Pipi came over for a couple games night, none of the other couples that were invited turned up, but that didn’t matter because we still had such a great time, and we haven’t laughed that much in such a long time. One of the funny thing we were talking about were things we say that is different over here - I had an experience this week, where I said to one of my work colleagues, “Oh, I think I made him (another colleague) feel stink!”.  His response was “what does that mean?” and he asked others in the office if they had heard of it, so we can be proud that “feeling stink” seems to be uniquely kiwi :-)

On Saturday we went on an Adventure to Freemantle. Freemantle is Perth’s port, and one of the earlier Western Australian settlements, and we had heard good things about their Markets and Fish ‘n’ Chips which we were keen to experience.  We decided to take public transport (a bus, and then 30-40 mins on the train), the kids hadn’t been on a train before, and Hyrum is still big into Thomas the Tank Engine, so it added to the excitement taking the train.  When we got to Freemantle, we headed towards the markets, and found a nice cafe for lunch on the way.  It’s not often we have lunch out, and it was really delicious.  When we got to the markets we were entertained by a street performer doing sword juggling and then fire eating and juggling and tricks on top of a makeshift platform, which was very entertaining.

The markets were typical markets. Lots of unusual things on display that you don’t usually see.  We ended up buying some ice creams, some kiwifruit, and a very cool ‘sand art’ pictured for Alysha as her special treat.  The sand art pack came with coloured sand and a stenciled sticker to make art. Alysha totally loved making at home.

After the market, we found the Freemantle chocolate factory, although their were no staff making chocolate when we went. We had a little look around, and I got Anna some chocolate bars, (Mint chocolate, White chocolate, and Chilii Chocolate).  I didn’t see much of them except for the chilli chocolate, that burnt my mouth, not the best choice.

As always, we had to go to the park and the kids enjoyed playing, but it seemed they enjoyed chasing the seagulls and playing with each other much more. Gracie and Hyrum ran after the seagulls right around the park.

We had our fish n chips Dinner on the waterfront at Cicerellos, (est. 1903), which was expensive but nice. The fish was extremely fresh, but wouldn’t go as far as saying the chips were the best I’ve ever had.  We had a great  family day out. It was very dark by the time we got home, but the kids where so good all the way home on the train and bus.

On Saturday morning Hyrum, Alysha and I went down to help clean the chapel, the kids just love helping here they can. The Stake President was down there with his kids and invited us over for dinner on Sunday night.

So On Sunday after church we went over to their home for dinner. They have a young family and are in our ward, and the kids were super excited to get to play with each other.  They have a beautiful family (4 kids) and it was just really nice to be invited out. They even gave us some yummy individual trifles to take home with us, which we enjoyed tonight.

The temperatures seemed to have dropped alot and the chill factor has increased with the wind having picked up too.  The Aussie colds and flu have knocked on our door and we let them in.  We are all suffering a little, and will be happier when we are back to health.

Till next week....
