Perth - Our Winter School Holidays

Perth Week 13 & 14
11th - 24th July 2011

The past two weeks have been School Holidays, and it has been a very different school holidays for us as I have been unwell with health problems and have been back and forth to the hospital. Grant was able to take a little time of work to help, and I tried to do as many fun things with the kids on the days we were not at the hospital as we could. On the plus side the hospital did have a lovely creche which all three kids just loved going to, which was a real blessing for us.

I really love the school holidays. Its so wonderful not having to rush back and forth to school and just being able to enjoy having all the kids home to do lots of things together.

We have built lots of huts and played lots of games, caught Gracie doing some ironing and have also enjoyed some fun outings as a family.

Here are some of the highlights:

We took the kids to a place called Whiteman park http://www.whitemanpark.com.au/

They have a fantastic motor museum there, Hyrum is a little car mad at the moment (a bit of a understatement - he takes after his car crazy Dad) Hyrum’s favorite movie is ‘Cars’ and he always has a couple of matchbox cars in his pockets where ever we go.

The Motor Museum was really impressive. They have cars and motor bikes from every time period, and every car you can imagine. Both Grant and Hyrum where in car heaven! They even had some can from movies such as Cars-we saw Lightening McQueen, Mater, Doc and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

They also had a Tractor museum which was free (by donation) which was also fantastic. They had these 3 little ride-on tractors that the kids enjoyed riding around the place on (we didnt get moans of ‘being tired’ or of having ‘sore feet’). They also did a similar thing to the motor museum, where they had tractors from lots of different time periods, it is pretty amazing how much technology has advanced.

The day wouldn’t have been complete without a ride on the Tram. The kids just thought this was great. They also had a working steam train but we though we would save that for another time.

We finished our day with the Transport museum which was also free it had all the different types of Transport we have used - horses, wagons, trains, trams, bikes, motor cycles and cars the kids enjoyed it but at this stage I was a bit tired and ‘over it’. They had crafts and activities on for the school holidays so Alysha enjoyed making paper cars and trains, while Gracie had a sleep and Hyrum and Grant were watching the steam train. It was a wonderful auto adventure a must for any little and big boy.

We have had quite a few rainy day in the past two weeks, and being winter school holidays so we had to find things to go out and do in the wet weather. We went to ‘SciTech’ a couple of times, which the kids always enjoy, but being a rainy wet school holiday day it was a really busy place. (as every other Mum had the same idea). So even though the kids had to wait their turn to play and experiment with things they were still happy to be there. Alysha even waited 20 mins for her turn for the robot to draw her picture, I was very impressed at how patiently she waited.

Another great place for a rainy day is our local library the kids just love it there. They love choosing there own library books and free dvds. We sit there for a long time going through and reading lots of books. They even have a few toys to play with which keeps them happy too.

Last weekend we went to a fantastic place called the Cuddly Animal Farm.  http://www.cuddlyanimalfarm.com/ A farm, where you can, yes, cuddle the animals.   We arrived just in time to watch the lambs being hand-fed - very cute unfortunately our children were all a bit scared to feed the lambs .  From that, we went into their indoors petting place where you can collect a small bucket of bread and cabbage leaves and feed the animals. They had lots of guinea pigs, rabbits, chicks, ducklings, lambs and piglets, that you could feed, touch and hold.  Hyrum really impressed us at how brave he was, and how gentle he was, noticed a ‘caring’ side to him that we probably hadn’t seen before.  Alysha and Gracie were not as adventurous.
They had a little ‘train’ operating continuously that the kids absolutely loved, and would have probably rode that all day if we let them.
They also had many outside animals that you could get up close with.  We all went into the rabbit enclosure together, and the rabbits came right up to us (looking for food I guess).  It was interesting to see how the kids responded, but certainly weren’t too sure of them.  We tried to encourage the kids to pat the goats and lambs, but Hyrum was the only one game enough.   A fantastic place to go and highly recommended.

On the way home we stopped by the Margaret River Chocolate company factory in the swan valley http://www.chocolatefactory.com.au/.  I went in and came out with a $20 bag of chocolate.  that was absolutely divine!

We had a wonderful day at church on sunday, Alysha was assigned to give a talk in primary at church on the topic ‘ A temple is a house of God’.  Being the great parents we are, we remembered the night before, and kept her up a little late so she could write her talk.  We gave here a few starters, but she pretty much came up with all the ideas herself.  Alysha kept on saying she wanted to do a long talk, though we encouraged her to stop at one page. She practised before she went to bed that night and before church the next morning.  Grant  I both went into primary to hear her give her talk.  She was amazing.  She delivered it so clearly and confidently.  We were really proud of our little girl. Its those kind of moments that as parents we remember when things aren’t going so great
When we were travelling back in the car Gracie keep singing ‘follow the prophet’ over and over again, her lesson must of made a real impression on her. so cute.

Over the last couple of weeks there have been some pretty amazing electrical storms that have passed through Perth with lots of thunder and lightning and torrential downpours.  We have been surprised by how much rain this place gets.  The weather has now warmed up a little also with most days a very mild 19 or 20 degrees.

Untill next time... we made homemade burgers for dinner through the week and thought we'd leave you with this photo:
